Mechanical engineers are found in a variety of fields. They might work for the federal government, the military, in industry, or for private companies. Fields in mechanical engineering include:
Research & Development
Product Design—everything from engines to biomedical products.
Manufacturing
Systems Management
Sales & Marketing—here a mechanical engineer would use their training to determine the need and use for new products.
More specifically, here are some job titles that a mechanical engineer is qualified for and what they would do on the job:
Automotive engineer. Designing car parts and engines.
Biomedical engineer. Designing artificial organs and limbs, for example.
Consulting. After working in their field for a while, an engineer can work on their own for clients they like.
Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) engineer. Design commercial, industrial, and residential heating and cooling systems.
Nuclear engineer. Designing nuclear power plants.
Robotics engineer. Designing robots to do things like build cars on an assembly line.
How They Get There
Mechanical engineers need to like math and science. They must be creative problem solvers with leadership abilities.
Courses mechanical engineers study include:
Robotics
Fluid Dynamics
Materials Science
Manufacturing Processes
Thermodynamics & Heat Transfer
Environmental Science
These are their core classes for the mechanical engineering major. They will also study liberal arts, like humanities, writing, and basic sciences, in order to achieve a well-rounded education—remember, mechanical engineers solve problems in a wide variety of fields.
In high school, students interested in mechanical engineering should take include:
Calculus
Chemistry
Physics
Biology
Mechanical Drawing or Drafting |
