The ICS (the test for a job in the coveted all India Services like Indian Administrative Services, Indian Police Services, Foreign Services, Revenues, Customs etc.) is a three staged exam. It consists of two stages of written exam and the third stage of Interview. The three stages are as follows:

1. Preliminary held in May in which one has to take one optional paper and a compulsory General Study (GS) Paper. This is an objective exam. The forms come out in the Employment News during the first week of December.

2. Mains exam to be held in November if you clear the Prelims. In this you have to take 9 papers. Two optional subjects with two papers each, two GS paper, One essay paper and two papers of qualifying nature in language (English and one regional language)

3. After mains there is the personality test which is basically an interview taken by senior officials of the Indian Government..

New to Civil Services preparations? Get exam-taking tips from people who have qualified in the exams (those who gave and couldn't qualify might give better pointers), a look at the previous years question papers before selecting your optionals, and then tonnes and tonnes of hard work. Much strategies and knowledge you need to beat the exam might be got from various magazines for the Civil Services.
